Proud To Birth

Hi, I'm Elicia!

Wife to Mike, Mummy to Bertie and Winnie, and cuddling companion to my fur babies. I live in Adelaide/Kaurna Land, where I have chosen to raise my family. We spend a lot of time outdoors, with a shared love of gardening, cooking and music in our home.

I have always been the nurturer, the big sister, and a lover of human connection. I have a great interest in alternative therapies and ways to heal the body. So in 2019 I became a remedial massage therapist, and nurtured a deep interest in how we can support ailments through touch and movement. After seeing the benefits of this work, helping clients both physically and emotionally, I decided to dive deeper into the pregnancy side of things.

My path to becoming a Doula began when I was pregnant with my first, where a keen interest in pregnancy massage developed. I quickly noticed how much soon-to-be mothers needed support, physically and emotionally. They needed human connection, understanding and a hand to guide them. In 2021 I enrolled in the Doula Academy Australia.

Pregnancy and birth was always something I couldn’t wait to experience, but I never anticipated the effects it holds on your whole self. After my first birth experience, I was emotionally stunned. I didn’t know how to be a mum, or process what I had gone through to get there. I felt undone, lost, and alone.

My first birth was in a hospital setting, where I received great care from the team of midwives. I did however feel out of control, disconnected which then spiraled during the post postpartum time. I struggled breastfeeding, received mixed opinions on what to do but mainly felt alone during the struggles.

Although it was hard, I am so thankful for the experience of having my first child in hospital, it was a beautiful pregnancy and I soaked in as much as I could. But I realised how out of my depth and how uncontrolled the journey felt. We were fortunate to experience a relatively smooth birth, but the challenges I faced during postpartum is one of the reasons I want to help other parents.

Two years later and pregnant with our second, I knew I wanted to birth at home. I had a harder pregnancy mentally but was so fortunate to have SMGP on my side and I was able to birth how I intended, calmly, in control and surrounded by love.

Something I am so passionate about is balancing your whole self when preparing to birth your baby.

But however you chose to birth, I will support you to a achieve a positive birth experience.
